Update: Southern Pacific Sugar Beet Gondola

September 24, 2021

Here is the latest update on painting the Southern Pacific Sugar Beet Gondola car. The top coat is being applied. This is the last of six coatings on the car, not including epoxy wood putty and caulking materials. We have used epoxy and linear polyurethane coatings and expect the car to last a very long time. This project was funded by a foundation grant, specifically for painting the car. While painting is mostly preservation work with some restoration, the main restoration project will be sometime in the future. This car was complete and operational when SLORRM received it, thus, actual restoration will be minimal, such as replacing some missing metal ladder rungs, straightening out bent metal, etc.

Out of over 1,000 cars in service in past years, there are now only 6 in existence. Our car is likely in the best condition of any cars. We even have spare parts.

Please visit the museum and see all of the improvements and new artifacts, interior exhibits and Display Track cars.
